The Center for Advanced Studies and the Arts (CASA) was established in south Oakland County, Michigan in 1983 by the public school districts of Berkley, Ferndale and Oak Park. The high schools of the districts intended to offer a wider variety of courses than any one of the schools could offer alone. In the 1983 - 1984 school year, CASA offered four classes and enrolled 35 students. Students attended CASA in the afternoon after morning classes at their home schools. By 2001 CASA had six member schools - the original three and Lamphere, Madison and Clawson high schools - and about 350 students. According to the CASA course catalog, CASA is designed to serve highly motivated students with a high level of maturity.
