Monster Memory
  • A squat but immensely broad human whose demeanor says that he is not often questioned, and never more than once by the same being. He is clearly a master of his trade, but what that trade entails is not immediately clear; probably making decisions and enforcing them upon the strongest and most recalcitrant of arena competitors. He seems highly aware, spotting minor details that many others would overlook, a useful skill in one who might be called upon to judge a contest of speedy weapons and magical deception.

Description
  • Dak, the arena master, is an NPC found on the Arena level of the Caverns of chaos. As his title implies, he organises fights in the Arena and their rewards. He imposes the rules of the arena on would-be participants — including disallowing invisible characters to enter the arena, and punishing 'cheaters' that teleport out of the arena during a fight and try to re-enter. Dak himself is a somewhat formidable opponent, at least at the stage of the game he is encountered. Though he can confuse, stun or paralyze PCs that attempt to re-enter the arena after teleporting out of it, he does not appear to have any special attacks in combat. Even though he is lawful, meaning that killing him is a chaotic act in the first place, talking to the ratling rebel after killing him is an act of Balance. Note that it is possible to unintentionally cause Dak to become hostile during an arena fight — e.g. if he is hit by a ball spell that reaches outside the front entrance of the arena. Doing so will end the fight after a certain amount of turns, and cause the arena master to attack without giving a reward for the completed fight .

Even though he is lawful, meaning that killing him is a chaotic act in the first place, talking to the ratling rebel after killing him (thus stopping the cruelty of the arena fights) is an act of Balance. Note that it is possible to unintentionally cause Dak to become hostile during an arena fight — e.g. if he is hit by a ball spell that reaches outside the front entrance of the arena. Doing so will end the fight after a certain amount of turns, and cause the arena master to attack without giving a reward for the completed fight (and, of course, forfeit the possibility of any future fights and rewards).
