He played junior and senior hockey with the Toronto Canoe Club in 1925-26 and then senior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros in 1926-27. After playing in a local Toronto league in 1927-28 & 1928-29 Boyd turned pro with the Boston Tigers in 1929-30. Boys was called up to the Boston Bruins in 1931-32 and played 29 games, scoring 2 goals and an assist. He was then traded to the minor pro Philadelphia Arrows. The Detroit Red Wings acquired him in 1934 and he played in 42 games that season. He was the head coach of the Reds from 1944-45 until he was replaced mid-season in 1946-47.
