McCoy's debut came in 1956, when he competed at Phoenix. It was a mediocre debut for the driver, starting 26th in the field of thirty and winding up 20th. McCoy then upped to a five-race schedule in 1957, starting the year off at his home track of Portland. He hit the ground running, recording a career 7th place start and following that up with a career-best 5th place effort. The rest of the year was good for the driver as well, finishing outside of the top-twenty just once with runs of 13th at Sacramento and 14th and 17th at Portland's later races. McCoy went back to a two race schedule in 1958, when he finished a career-best 54th in points. He started off very well, starting deep in the pack at Riverside, but driving to a solid 6th place finish in the race, just a few laps down. On the flipside, however, McCoy lost an engine in his other start that year at Sacramento and finished 25th of twenty-eight. McCoy's final career race came in 1959, when he returned to Sacramento. He found no redemption at the track, overheating his engine and falling out to a 17th place finish in a twenty-six car field.
