She was to marry Rathgar's heir, his only son Lordan. During their wedding feast, raiders attacked the keep, killing or attempting to kill anyone who resisted. Once the men were all down they took Dierna and her wedding presents and escaped. Dierna was being used to feed some mage-spawned creature when Lordan's sister, Kerowyn, tracked them down. She killed the mage, and with a little help from Tarma and Warrl, rescued Dierna. Returning to the keep, Dierna undertook to nurse Lordan back to health, during which time they fell in love. As soon as they could they finally did marry, and had at least one child together. Kerowyn left an impression of Dierna as a woman easily manipulated by stronger, unscrupulous family members. This later proves to be the case. In Winds of Fate, Quenten refers to her as "an information-siphon for her relatives."
