| - The Screw Ball Mini is a yo-yo produced by Abbe Toys and distributed by Tomy exclusively in Japan. It was released in 1998, as the miniature version of the Screw Ball. It is reasonably heavy for its size at 50 grams, due to the metal disks on the inner surfaces of the body halves. It was designed by Takahiko Hasegawa. During prototyping in 1998, Taka tested mini yo-yos with diameters of 34mm, 36mm, 38mm, 40mm, and 42mm. After extensive testing, he concluded that the optimal minimum diameter that a yo-yo could have while maintaining acceptable playability and performance was 38 mm (+/-1 mm). He worked with Tomy to make the Screw Ball Mini a reality. Unlike the original Screw Ball, it could not return to the user's hand on its own. Although it does have what appears to be miniaturized auto-return clutch inside one of the body halves, it is actually there for show. Also, the Screw Ball Mini features a tiny transaxle sleeve. Also released was a limited promotional edition version of the yo-yo given out in the Famitsu video game magazine, featuring the likeness of Necky the Fox, the cartoon mascot created by Japanese manga artist Susumu Matsushita. Hironori Mii had employed this yo-yo for the most difficult challenge of Team Off-String; In order to reach the highest level of membership, he or she must perform all of the team's offstring tricks using the Screw Ball Mini, and even that is exceptionally difficult, especially with the yo-yo being very small at 38mm in diameter and its narrow, looping-oriented shape.
