She was discovered by a talent agent, Pat Domigan, at age 11, after appearing in a local play. She worked as a child actress and model, appearing in ads for various products, including Diet Rite Cola and Downy fabric softener. In 1968, she appeared in the role of Becky Thatcher in The New Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which ran on NBC for one season. After the series ended, she left acting. Later, she graduated from Brigham Young University and became a high school teacher. As a high school teacher, Haslam served as adviser of the Junior Class Council, which organized the annual junior and senior proms at the school where she taught. This experience as high school "prom consultant" led to her alter ego, "Patty the Prom Pro". As Patty, Haslam answers questions on her blog at Prom-Night.com, where she offers advice and services to high school students preparing for their proms. Haslam also co-produces the Xanadu Film Festival, a student film festival in Southern California.
