Darth Kryos was a Twi'lek male Sith Lord, the apprentice of Darth Nihl, eventually becoming the leader of the One Sith Remnant. As a young child on Ryloth, he was found by the Sith and taken, once they felt his high connection to the Force. By the end of Darth Krayt's holdouts, a conflict of the One Sith against the fledging Galactic Federation Triumvirate, he had taken over the Remnant, as Nihl was killed in battle. He took the few remaining Sith after they lost the conflict and fled into the Outer Rim Territories. Kryos eventually led his followers into the Empire-in-exile, which was one of the three members of the Triumvirate.

He helped Allya Pallopides, a distant descendent of Palpatine, overthrow the Fel dynasty and come to power as Empress. She created the Galactic Imperium, and Kryos became her Grand Secretariat. Empress Pallopides declared war on the Third Republic, which was the government formed out of the Galactic Alliance Remnant and the New Jedi Order, on his orders, in 168 ABY. She essentially became Kryos' puppet, and he really ruled the Imperium.
