- The son of Edwin Schallert, drama editor of the Los Angeles Times and the dean of West Coast critics, William Schallert became interested in an acting career while at UCLA in 1942. After graduation, Schallert became involved with the Circle Theater, eventually becoming one of its owners, and made his film debut in The Foxes of Harrow (1947). He was ubiquitous in movies and TV ever since; from 1979 to 1981, he was president of the Screen Actors Guild. Until his death in early May 2016, he stayed active with SAG projects and never gave retirement a thought.

- William Joseph Schallert (born July 6, 1922) is an American actor who has appeared in many films and in such television series as The Smurfs, The Rat Patrol, Gunsmoke, The Patty Duke Show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, Bonanza, Leave It to Beaver, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Get Smart.
