Stephen Joseph Cannell (5 Feb 1941; d. 30 Sep 2010) was a writer, and the creator of the Shane Scully series of detective novels. An audiobook version of Cannell's novel The Tin Collectors was purchased by retired FBI profiler Terry McCaleb prior to his death in early 2004. In the mid-2000s, Cannell spent time with LAPD detective Harry Bosch in the Department's Open-Unsolved Unit while researching a project. He gave Bosch a mug with the phrase "What's the bad guy up to?" printed on it as a gift.
