Malorie Blackman’s Cloud Busting is a truly brilliant book that really makes you think about the true value of friendship. The language is beautifully descriptive and creates very vivid imagery as well as having lovely illustrations. It is written entirely in verse, using different types of poetry throughout with an explanation about the different styles at the end. I got this book out of the library but loved it so much I had to buy my own copy, it’s a must read!

  • Malorie Blackman’s Cloud Busting is a truly brilliant book that really makes you think about the true value of friendship. The language is beautifully descriptive and creates very vivid imagery as well as having lovely illustrations. It is written entirely in verse, using different types of poetry throughout with an explanation about the different styles at the end. Cloud Busting is written from the point of view of Sam, the school bully, and is about his relationship with Davey, the eccentric new boy. It is a story of an extraordinary friendship but also of weakness, betrayal and loss; it illustrates the damaging effects that can come of peer pressure and stereotyping. It would be a brilliant book to be used in PSHE for children in year 5 or 6 as it covers so many emotions and is a book that many children could relate to as it describes different personalities and how they interact together. It could also be used in literacy as an example of the differing types of poetry and how they can be used. I got this book out of the library but loved it so much I had to buy my own copy, it’s a must read!
