Gemini monsters (Japanese: デュアルモンスター Dyuarumonsutā "Dual Monster") are Effect Monsters with the ability "Gemini". They have effects, but these effects must be "unlocked" by performing an additional Normal Summon on them while they are face-up on the field; until then, they are treated as Normal Monsters on the field and in the Graveyard (everywhere else they are treated as Effect Monsters). The "Chemicritter" archetype is heavily focused on, and almost completely composed of, Gemini monsters. Many of the "Red-Eyes" monsters introduced in Series 9 are Gemini monsters.

They have effects, but these effects must be "unlocked" by performing an additional Normal Summon on them while they are face-up on the field; until then, they are treated as Normal Monsters on the field and in the Graveyard (everywhere else they are treated as Effect Monsters). Whlie a Gemini Monster are on the field as a Normal Monster by their own effect, the player may declare a Normal Summon of it again so that it becomes an effect monster. If so, it is not treated as on the field during the Summon Negation Window. But any Equip Cards equipped to the monster are not sent to graveyard, and remains equipped to the monster (They will be sent to graveyard if the Summon is negated, or it leaves the field during Summon response window). If a Level 5 or higher Monster would be Summoned this way, the player does not tribute monster for it. The process of the second Normal Summon is unofficially called "Gemini Summon" (or "Dual Summon" in OCG, not to be confused with "Double Summon") Gemini monsters debuted in Tactical Evolution. So far, Gemini monsters have yet to make a proper appearance in the anime or manga. However, several members have made brief appearances in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's, Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL and Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V. "Phoenix Gearfried" is on the poster for the World Racing Grand Prix, "Gigaplant" appears in a flashback of Akiza Izinski's past and "Crusader of Endymion" has been seen played by random Duelists in [[Yu-Gi-Oh! - Episode 114|Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 114]] as well as [[Yu-Gi-Oh! - Episode 1|Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 1]]. Multiple copies of "Ancient Gear Knight" are used by members of Duel Academy during their invasion of Heartland City in [[Yu-Gi-Oh! - Episode 36|Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 36]]. Rin used "Lucky Pied Piper" in a flashback in [[Yu-Gi-Oh! - Episode 54|Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 54]]. "Future Samurai" appeared in a flashback, used by No.9 in [[Yu-Gi-Oh! - Episode 126|Yu-Gi-Oh! episode 126]]. The "Chemicritter" archetype is heavily focused on, and almost completely composed of, Gemini monsters. Many of the "Red-Eyes" monsters introduced in Series 9 are Gemini monsters.
