- The term is most commonly applied to the source code of software that is made available to the general public with either relaxed or non-existent intellectual property restrictions. This allows users to create user-generated software content through either incremental individual effort, or collaboration.
- According to the character's co-creator, Jerzy, the villain Open Source came about as such: In short, one can follow the schematics for the character of Jenny Nowhere: Creators should be encouraged to come up with an Open Source that actively avoids comparisons with existing versions of the character...to go out on a limb and make up something totally unique. In a nutshell: Use the name, make up the rest. Of course, one is not required to follow the "Open Source" name and scheme, but it should be a fun idea that people can play with.

- Open source is an approach to design, development, and distribution offering practical accessibility to a product's source (goods and knowledge). Some consider open source as one of various possible design approaches, while others consider it a critical strategic element of their operations.
- Open source software, by definition, means that the source code is freely available, the source code may be used, copied, extended, and redistributed with or without modifications, and may be offered either with or without a fee. Where a fee is charged it is most commonly charged for warranties, support, or for accepting indemnity or liability obligations to your customers. Where a fee is charged you cannot charge for the original source code.
- Open source is a model of development where plans are available to other people. First created for software (where it became successful with Linux) it is gradually expanding. To text (e.g. Wikipedia), but also some hardware and even soft drinks.
- Open source is a software philosophy that believes that software development is best done transparently. Most open source software is distributed for free, and includes the source code so that users can maintain it themselves, if necessary.
- Open Source is computer software for which the source code is freely available that can be read, viewed, modified, and distributed, by anyone who desires but you cannot sell it to make a profit. Examples of an open source technology are:
* Linux
* Ubuntu
* Kubuntu
* Dabien
* Apache
* etc.
- Open Source is software with a license that makes the source code available and user-editable.
- Open source software is a kind of software which is available for free use and modification, as well as redistribution of both original and modified versions. The Open Source movement involves people supporting the use of open source licenses as a way to develop better quality software.
- Free software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation, is software which can be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed with little or no restriction. Thus, software is free software if its source code (the human-readable form of software) is available with a software licence which grants recipients these permissions, or if the source code is in the public domain. The antonym of free software is proprietary software. Free software is not to be confused with "Freeware", which is software made available free of charge. Freeware may or may not be proprietary.
- Open source is a development methodology, which offers practical accessibility to a product's source (goods and knowledge). Some consider open source as one of various possible design approaches, while others consider it a critical strategic element of their operations. Before open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; the term open source gained popularity with the rise of the Internet, which provided access to diverse production models, communication paths, and interactive communities.
- Open source software, free software, free and open source software (FOSS), free, libre and open source software (FLOSS) and sometimes libre software are all names for software whose source code is available, and can be freely used for any purpose, and be modified and redistributed in either the original or modified form. Despite that, open source software is often copyrighted and may be restricted in some respects. For example, wikipedia:copyleft licences (such as the LGPL require that modifications to the code be distributed under the same license.
- Open Source programming, in a figurative sense, is a new and interesting way of reinventing the wheel, but all the while making sure that the new "wheel" will not be in any way compatible with existing roadworks or, at the very least, spin. In other words, "open source" is the channel through which aspiring programmers convey their visions about life in general.
