When the beam makes contact with an organic object, all the energy is transferred to a small area, and will instantly blow a human into chunks. Mk. VII MJOLNIR armor seems to deflect the shots fairly well as the powerful shields turn most of the virus coated gold away before it impacts. However, a Spartan will still get shredded if their shields are down.
