- GNU is a computer operating system composed entirely of free software. Its name is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not Unix!” This name was chosen because GNU's design is Unix-like, but differs from Unix by being free software and containing no Unix code. Development of GNU was initiated by Richard Stallman and was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation (FSF).

The original version also showed up in The Animal Show episode 306, Muppet Treasure Island, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland and 33_(2002) Season 33 of Sesame Street. On Mopatop's Shop the puppet was reused as various characters like King Gnu, Galloping Gordon, and a nameless gnu.
