Following his defeat, Desmarais named him Minister of Environment and Tourism. After Claude Desmarais shockingly resigned as leader and Prime Minister, Ajzenstat was the surprise choice to succeed him. However, Desmarais agreed to stay on as Prime Minister in the interim period. This meant that Ajzenstat would continue to serve in the cabinet while also leading the Liberal Party in Parliament.
