Es un coupé de cuatro plazas con motor central delantero longitudinal y tracción trasera. Es el sucesor del Mazda RX-7, y compite con otros deportivos asequibles. Además de dos puertas laterales tradicionales hay dos pequeñas que se abren en el otro sentido. Entre ambas no hay un pilar de la carrocería, sino que al abrirlas el hueco no tiene obstáculos en el medio. El RX-8 tiene un motor Wankel atmosférico de 1.3 litros de cilindrada ubicado entre el eje delantero y el habitáculo. Existen 2 versiones del motor, una con 192 CV y otra con 231 CV. Tanto su consumo de gasolina como de aceite es más elevado que el de un motor Otto. El motor tiene una alta potencia máxima y un límite de velocidad alto, que hace que a bajas revoluciones el par sea más bajo que en motores Otto. Sus emisiones contaminantes son equivalentes a las de otros motores Otto, y por tener menos piezas el ciclo de mantenimiento es mayor.
