Synopsis
  • In the Savage Land, Iron Man and the rest of the mighty Avengers face off against a Skrull invasion force. Tony's armor is compromised by an alien force that infects all Starktech on the planet Earth. As a last-ditch contingency effort, Tony transmits a prerecorded set of instructions to the one man on Earth he can still trust - Jim Rhodes. At Camp Hammond, Rhodey receives Tony's orders and flies off. As he soars towards New York in his War Machine armor, he encounters a Skrull delivery ship and a Super-Skrull possessing the powers of Nova, Drax, Moondragon and Comet Man. The battle is fierce, but War Machine triumphs when he hurls the Super-Skrull towards the Skrull ship, causing both of them explode. He then flies to a top-secret satellite designed by Tony Stark. The satellite was constructed in secrecy and not even S.H.I.E.L.D. is aware of its existence. Further, it was built using technology that was once acquired by the defunct Stane International and has no Starktech incorporated into its construction at all. Aboard the satellite, Rhodey meets Suzi Endo, a former member of Force Works, and one of a handful of people that Stark trusts. Tony's recorded instructions foretell the coming of the Skrull invasion army and he is relying upon Rhodey to be Earth's last line of defense. Rhodey's armor interfaces with the command center of the satellite and it suddenly transforms into a massive mecha-sized battlesuit. Rhodey broadcasts a warning to the Skrull Empire - "Bring it."

Notes
  • * For the duration of this story-arc, the title of this series is superseded by the surrogate title War Machine: Weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D. This is not an actual title change as the indicia still reads Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. * This issue is a "Secret Invasion" tie-in. The events from this issue take place concurrently with events from Secret Invasion #6. * Suzi Endo is a former member of Rhodey's old team Force Works and used to operate under the codename Cybermancer. She first appeared in Force Works #6. * First appearance of the Satellite Armor.
