abstract
  • The Keep was an ancient structure, older than Ugarat. Most of the remnants of confounding ancient mechanisms which had been found inside had been lost over time during the many explorations of the monument. Amongst those who had studied what little remained of them was Samar Dev. The massive Keep was carved out of a flat-topped mesa which had been carved hollow and was surrounded by a deep moat. The stone bridge across it had been destroyed by Moranth munitions. The scorched and battered doors to the Keep were made of solid iron with a broad riveted looking mechanism. The few windows high up were also sealed by iron doors, barbed with angled arrow-slits. Once through the doors, twenty paces (by a Toblakai's standards) through a passage, lined with dark arrow-slits led to an inner gate. The arched ceiling and walls of the passage did not touch each other or the paved floor with gaps of about a finger's width visible between them and looked like they had been lowered some time in the past. Hidden chambers to either side were unlit. Once through the inner gate, the visitor entered a courtyard flanked by four walls cut out of the rock and a rectangle of sky visible above. The tiered walls had fortified landings, balconies leading to doorways some yawning black, others closed, and numerous windows. The wall opposite the gate had twenty-two levels, the one to the left eighteen and the one to the right seventeen. The outer wall above the gate, had twelve levels and in the centre was flanked by projections each holding six more.
