He is praised by artists such as Mojocat, Gabe "The Ist" Gonzalez (guitar and vocals Bad Bad Whiskey) and The Reverend Horton Heat for his use of steel bass strings and using them as if they were nylon. Josh Nightmare plays a King Double Bass customized with an electric pickup. His bass amplifier is a Peavy Bass 1000 and Kustom 4x10 cabinet. His guitar setup is a Gretch Falcon and a Fender Blues Deluxe Amplifier. The Reverend Horton Heat has stated: "That boy can sure get down on them Cat Guts!" (a brand of upright bass strings) His critics often shun him for his extreme patriotism and working-class values. He was raised in a family of pipe fitters at a sprinkler company and did so before he was discovered in Bad Bad Whiskey by legendary guitarist Mojocat.
