- The Hunger is one of Abaddon's minions and in service to Varesh Ossa. While only one of many demons at Varesh's disposal for bringing about the Nightfall, it is the only one that speaks during cinematics. It is likely named for its intense appetite for meat (alluded to in the quest Herds to the Slaughter). The creature, like Varesh herself, seems to share a bond with other demons, most notably The Drought. The Hunger constantly spams Hunger's Bite to inflict multiple conditions and steal health from a foe. Note that Hunger's Bite can not be disabled, and interrupting the skill is not effective due to the 0 recharge time and inability to disable it. Despite its size, the Hunger can be knocked down. Lightbringer's Gaze also works well against The Hunger.
- The Hunger was artificially created in a lab, mixing together ordinary yeast cells with the omnivorous microbes from Pluto, the most voracious bacteria in all the cosmos. Their hibernation mechanism was removed, purging them of rest and leaving them as nothing more than monsters with an insatiable appetite for destruction and carnage. They appeared as a giant swarm of tiny black dust bunnies. They were contained within an electromagnetic field that rendered them defenceless (TV: Black Hunger)
- The Hunger is a short story featured in Heroes Rise, Darkness Falls. It was written by Erik Sabol, for Blizzard Entertainment's 2009 writing contest, achieving a runner-up position. It was published in the above anthology with editorial services by Cameron Dayton. It is described as "a gruesome, unflinching dissection of cowardice and sloth, a haunting parable and stark reminder that courage may be found in the unlikeliest of places."

Dadurch wurden Bakterien geschaffen die ständig aktiv sind. Sie haben einen unstillbaren Appetit auf Zerstörung und Gemetzel. Sie essen alles von Abfällen bis zu kompletten Menschen. Außerdem töten die stärkeren Bakterien die schwächeren Bakterien, so dass nur die stärksten überleben.
