Synopsis
  • Sam Makoa meets with Superboy and convinces him to accompany him back to what's left of the base of the Silicon Dragons. The previous expedition there disappeared, and seeing as how Knockout survived, Makoa suspects King Shark is involved. When they get down there, they find the remains of the previous team before being blinded by a green light. Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) is on location, and after a brief misunderstanding, he and Superboy decide to find out what's happened together. While this is happening, Makoa has been nabbed by the Scavenger, who is there seeking weapons left behind by the Dragons. As SB and GL go after him, Scavenger is attacked by the Black Manta, who has apparently just made a deal with the devil--literally. Rather than just being a black man in a high tech wet suit, now he's a ferocious manta like creature. A free for all ensues, with Superboy and GL trying to keep their ground between the two villains battling it out. Meanwhile, the Technician also happens to be in the lair and recovers Superboy's specs. Back on the islands, Roxy gets a letter from the police academy. While GL and Superboy are dealing with Black Manta, Makoa manages to trick Scavenger into ignoring them and attacking Manta. While the two of them renew their attacks, Makoa and Superboy help an injured Green Lantern to their ship and they make their way out as the base explodes behind them. A banged up Makoa feels proud of himself and gets word that Dan "Terrible" Turpin is coming from Metropolis to check his request at a Special Crimes Unit for Hawaii. Green Lantern says goodbye to Superboy and Tana Moon at the Compound and flies off.
Notes
  • * This is the first appearance of Black Manta's new form, which he gained via Underworld Unleashed. * This issue gives special thanks to Peter David and Karl Kesel.

  • Do we talk sensibly, or do we become a super-hero cliche?
