Auf kurze Distanz ist er ähnlich wirkungsvoll wie Energiewaffen, wie beispielsweise Phaser. Im Jahr 2267 besucht die USS Enterprise Capella IV, um ein Handelsabkommen zu etablieren. Als sich der Landetrupp auf den Planeten beamt, bemerken die Sternenflottenoffiziere, dass sich ein Klingone in der Gefolgschaft von Maab, einem ihrer Gastgeber, befindet. Der noch unerfahrene Sicherheitsoffizier des Landetrupps, Lieutenant Grant, zieht daraufhin seinen Phaser und richtet ihn auf den Klingonen Kras. Der Capellaner Keel befürchtet einen Angriff auf den klingonischen Gast und tötet den Offizier mit seinem Kligat.
