Having stepped up the ranks from day one since entering, Roy worked diligently throughout the years to gain his position, defeating pirate after pirate in order to secure the Marines from invasion. He is highly infamous among pirates, giving him the notorious moniker of Bane of the Sea (海の敵 Uminoteki, lit; Sea's Enemy). However; he isn't one to be indiscriminate against pirates, and has been known to respect some of the greatest figures within the pirates as a result of his encounters. Prior to his ascension to Vice Admiral, and when he was a Commodore, Roy had been a brash young man who had thought it best to fight to the death with any match. As such, he boldly challenged the might of the man known as Gekko Moriah, prior to his ascension to the Shichibukai. However; he was brutally defeated, and was left with a permanent scar across his back as a result. However; due to being saved by Monkey D. Garp, his superior, he was taught the very important trait of humility. Since then, Roy traveled and continued to defeat and arrest pirates. At one point of time, he would encounter the man famed across the world as, "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh. Among meeting him, Roy didn't brandish any weapons, knowing it would be useless to fight a man of his caliber. Impressed by Roy, Rayleigh taught the young man to employ Haki, these teachings being the reason for his promotion to Vice Admiral later on in his life.
