| - The player can also continuously walk into the foreground or background by inputting u, U or d, D.
- Sidestepping is the shortest and fastest of the three dodges (rolling, side, and air), and it is the only one where the player effectively remains stationary. Though the sidestep animation shows the character leaning into the back or foreground, the invincibility frames gained allows the character to dodge all attacks, including those that come from the foreground or background, such as the lava wave in Norfair.

Though the sidestep animation shows the character leaning into the back or foreground, the invincibility frames gained allows the character to dodge all attacks, including those that come from the foreground or background, such as the lava wave in Norfair. Also, in Smash 4, when spot dodging, if holding the shield button, the player will shield after the spot dodge. This is useful for avoiding combo setups with a fast startup but end up slowing down, although it does leave your character open for a few frames due to spot dodge end lag.
