| - The Grimstone Institute was a Confederate training ground developed for training psionic individuals. During the emergence of psychics, all major Terran powers decided that a special place was needed to train these people into honing their abilities for the good of everyone else. Many were reluctant to trust any of the governments with the handling of potential weapons they hardly understood. After years of negotiation, the factions agreed to set up a trial base to see what would happen if so many psychics came together. At first, there were only low level psychics attending the institute. For the most part, training and research were relatively uneventful save for the occasional telepathy-based fights. However, everything changed once a high level student was entered into the program. Suddenly, a military contingent was sent to oversee the potential of this new psychic. This contingent included an extremely aggressive trainer sent to ensure that the person met with the standards set by unnamed officials. The training became more harsh than previously recommended (Mass Effect: BAaT). Eventually, the psychic suffered a mental breakdown and ended up killing everyone at the institute. All attempts by local militia to stop the psionic rampage met with failure and blood. A nuclear strike was finally launched to stop the psychic leaving a smouldering crater where a city of 1,500,000 once lived. Deemed an abysmal failure, all records regarding events leading up to the incident were classified and the project was cancelled indefinately. With the resulting political backlash, the Confederacy made laws that made it mandatory to hand over any and all psychic individuals to the military. To decrease the chances of any psychics slipping through, certain bounty hunters were hired to hunt down these people with special dispensations of the law. These hunters became the first wranglers. Only psionic echoes of pain remain at the site of the catastrophe. Whenever anyone tries to visit the crater, they often suffer hallucinations that leave them catatonic or in some cases dead. This made all terran factions designate the site off limits to anyone.
