The USS Saratoga (NCC-1887) was a 23rd century Federation Miranda-class starship operated by Starfleet. In 2286, while patrolling Sector 5, Neutral Zone, the Saratoga encountered a probe of unknown origin on a direct course to Earth. As the crew attempted to make contact, however, the ship was neutralized by the probe, the transmissions of which were being carried on an amplification wave of enormous power, impacting on all ship's systems. Het schip had slechts een nieuw registratienummer opgeplakt gekregen. Het kan aangenomen worden dat de neutrale zone die de Saratoga aan het patrouilleren was een gezamenlijke zone is van de Federatie en het Klingon rijk. Cartwright zei namelijk dat de sonde in of vlakbij de Klingon ruimte reisde. De Saratoga is opmerkzaam in de Star Trek saga, omdat deze het eerste schip met een vrouwelijke kapitein is. De kapitein wordt door Madge Sinclair gespeeld, die later ook nog kapitein Silva La Forge in TNG: "Interface" speelde. Hier was ze de commando officier van de USS Hera.
