Veska, nicknamed "the Klingon Gibraltar" by Starfleet, was the fourth planet in the Klathind star system in the Klingon Empire in the Alpha or Beta Quadrant. It was a class N planet, and it had two moons. It was a pelagic world, its largest landmass on only 350 by 120 kilometers. It had a cool temperate, semi-tropical climate, a thick atmosphere and a 22-hour-long day. The climate was ideal for Klingons, as it was humid but not too warm. Sea farming supplied much of the food for the base and visiting starships.

  • Veska was a pragmatic chimpanzee and Prefect of the ape community known as Chalo. In 3085, Veska's inquisitive young son Arno, discovered a downed spacecraft some distance away from the prefecture. Upon telling his father, Arno and he (accompanied by some gorilla soldiers) inspected the crashed vessel, but found only a single deceased astronaut (the other two astronauts, Burke and Virdon, had been rescued by a human named Farrow while Arno was busy fetching his father). Arno suggested that whoever built the ship hailed from a superior culture. This observation visibly shook the child's father, and he warned him not to speak such blasphemies again. More pressing to him however, was the fact that there were still two missing humans. He sent a gorilla riding party back to Central City to tell Councilor Zaius what he had discovered. He then returned to Chalo and warned the villagers to be on the lookout of two renegade humans. Zaius' assistant Galen (Veska's second cousin on Galen's mother's side) and Chief of Security Urko were sent to Chalo to capture the missing humans.

Despite the limited land, the good weather and small and easily controlled planet made a good site for a Klingon military base. Therefore they founded what became the greatest Klingon base along the Federation frontier and the Orion Neutrality Area. Its purpose was to stop all Federation and Orion incursions into Klingon space, and punish the occasional transgressor. Military forces deployed at Veska varied, but usually consisted of five to seven Klingon strategic forces, all part of the Klingon 3rd Frontier Naval Division commanded by Admiral Klithis epetai- Horon in the late 23rd century. Sea farming supplied much of the food for the base and visiting starships. Veska had a technological/sociopolitical index of 999794-75 and a planetary trade profile of DDHEBCE/C (D). It had a total surface area of 642,424,260 square kilometers and, with 7% land mass, a total land area of 44,969,698 square kilometers. About 31% of its makeup was normal metals, 8% was gemstones, 2% was industrial crystals, and it had trace amounts of radioactive elements and other special minerals.
