Craig Borten is an American screenwriter. His first produced screenplay was Academy Award nominated Dallas Buyers Club. He has been writing scripts for over 20 years, both on spec and at major studios. Fresh out of Syracuse he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career as a screenwriter when he read about Ron Woodruff, the fast-living, homophobic rodeo cowboy with AIDS who was smuggling drugs from Mexico into the United States. He thought there might be a story here, so he went to Dallas and interviewed Ron Woodruff and got his story. Woodruff died 4 months later. This was in 1992 and Borten struggled to find financing and actors who wanted to commit to the film. Melisa Wallack was added on as a co-writer. Eventually he found the backing with tremendous help from Robbie Brenner and with Matthew McConaughey on board, it was finally being made.
