A shakedown cruise (also known as shakedown time) was an operation where a new starship and her crew tested its systems. It was usually a routine or even a brief ceremonial "maiden voyage", but could also extend to at least one year. A shakedown could reveal flaws inherent in the vessel's construction, especially in prototypes or new technologies. Among the ships that have had them are the USS Excelsior, USS Enterprise-A, USS Enterprise-B, USS Defiant and USS Enterprise-E.

- A shakedown cruise is an operation where a newly launched starship tests its new systems. The shakedown cruise provides engineers an idea of a vessel's operation and capabilities, which is then inputted to the ship's shakedown log or master log. (TNG eBook: A Sea of Troubles) The second Defiant-class USS Defiant did not have time for a shakedown cruise before its participation in the final battle of the Dominion War. (DS9 novelization: What You Leave Behind)
- A shakedown cruise tests a new or recently refit starship's systems, determining any faults or problems, as well as any performance issues. In 2364, Ethan Arden from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers came aboard the USS McKinnon to assist her crew with their shakedown cruise after a refit. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Perfect Girl") In 2389, on Stardate 66150, the HMS Prometheus undertook its shakedown cruise while fighting Klingon pirates, capturing a freighter used by the House of Korgath. Damage to the ship during the scuffle was light, but Captain John Greene expressed he'd hoped those at the commissioning ceremony hadn't roughed up his new ship too much.
