One Hundred and Eighteen Feathers was a mantle crafted with one hundred and eighteen Kenku feathers by the monk Ichirai, who had followed on the footsteps of the individual who had journeyed through one hundred and eighteen incarnations before meeting the Kenku and ascending to become the Fortune of Death, Emma-O. However each time Ichirai discovered a Kenku teacher it transformed into a crow and fled, leaving behind a feather. The monk wore the mantle while he meditated and prayed for one hundred and eighteen days, reached enlightenment, and flew into the sky as a crow. A peasant farmer retrieved the mantle, which had been left behind. The wearer could speak to crows and became one of these birds.
