Benjamin W. Rastus was a member of the Old Guard, the group of Imperial officers that were educated and trained in the Old Republic Naval Academy. He was still versed in the customs and etiquette of the Old Republic during his service in the Imperial Navy, though he followed the Empire with complete loyalty, believing it to be the legitimate heir to the old Senate. Though it was rumored that he questioned or even disagreed with some of the ideals of the New Order, there was no doubt he was solidly behind it. Even without his distinguished combat record, he was well respected for his excellent training of younger officers; many of the Empire's finest commanding officers began their career under Rastus's command.

With his unique command style, which could best be described as quiet but extremely efficient; he easily was able to attain the rank of Vice Admiral following the retirement of Grand Admiral Morlok Adlerson; and then reassigned as the Empire's Chief of Naval Operations. A post which he used to maintain the reorganized Navy as an effective, and distinguished fighting force. He held the position for several years before retiring to a quiet life somewhere in the Galaxy.
