La Federación no tenía datos sobre el planeta, previamente al despacho de una misión de investigación de la nave USS Ariel en el año 2269. Los registros de sensores de la USS Enterprise, reportaron numerosas formas de vida, que en la observación en la superficie demostraron que eran de varios mundos lejanos, tales como Canopus III y Marabel. Porciones del planeta sufrieron profundas terraformaciones, y el planeta tenía varios ecosistemas muy disímiles coexistiendo muy cercanamente entre sí, como por ejemplo una jungla y un desierto separados apenas por un río. El agua del mismo era, al decir del Doctor McCoy, "demasiado pura". El descubrimiento de una gran concentración urbana a casi 100 km. del desierto demostró finalmente que todo esto era un gran zoológico diseñado por los Lactranos.

One such example included a desert and a rainforest separated by a river. The water discovered on Lactra VII was clear and palatable, but was, according to Spock, "too pure." Sechs Wochen später ereilt dieses Schicksal auch die auf der Suche nach der Crew befindlichen Enterprise-Offiziere Kirk, Spock und McCoy. Nachdem die Lactraner erkennen, dass die Menschen eine höhere Form von Intelligenz aufweisen, lassen sie sie frei (TAS: ). Lactra VII war auf einer Sternenkarte hinter Dexter Remmick in TNG: zu sehen und liegt augenscheinlich in der Nähe von Daran V. Der Name dieses Planeten lässt vermuten, dass er der Planet eines Planetensystems mit der Bezeichnung „-System“ ist. Die Existenz dieses dazugehörigen Planetensystems lässt sich nicht durch Canon-Quellen belegen, ergibt sich allerdings aus der fiktiven Benennungskonvention, einen Planeten ohne speziellen Eigennamen nach dem dazugehörigen Zentralgestirn zu benennen.
