Walter originally was studying Genocidal Techniques of the 20th Century, but moved to Media Studies during the summer of 1974. It was there that he met Wilhelm, employed by the College as a Lab Technician. The two became firm friends, forming the bedrock of the future band. During the autumn of 1974 they recruited drummer David Agnew (formerly of University of Manitoba based Lobe) and George Spelvin via their mutual interest in native throatwarbling techniques. For the next six years the band had very limited success though did develop a small fanbase amongst disenchanted, self-loathing, young Germans. Thankfully for Wilhelm Scream, this is quite a large group.

Alongside a certain recording of the cry of the red-tailed hawk, the "Universal Telephone Ring" and "Castle Thunder," it is probably the most well-known cinematic sound cliché. It is believed to have been provided by actor/singer Sheb Wooley. The Wilhelm's revival came from Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt, who tracked down the original recording (which he found as a studio reel labeled "Man being eaten by alligator"). He named it after Wilhelm, a minor character who emitted the scream in the 1953 movie The Charge at Feather River. Its use in Star Wars was the beginning of something of an in-joke amongst some sound designers of the film industry, especially at Skywalker Sound. Some people, once aware of it, recognize it immediately. Some of them feel that it distracts from the film and interrupts the flow of the film. Other sound effects, such as the Tarzan yell, heard in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, are also considered distracting from the narrative. (The Tarzan yell is also heard in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, during the establishing shot on Kashyyyk. The pitch of it seems to have been altered slightly.) In his endnotes for The Essential Guide to Warfare, Jason Fry hinted that the Wilhelm scream was uttered in the holodrama The Charge at Feather Nebula.

In "North by North Quahog", during the car chase, Peter avoids a piano in the center of the mall. Just before the priests working with Mel Gibson crash into it, the pianist jumps out of the way screaming. In "Long John Peter", during the pirate duel between Griffin, his band of pirates, and Shelley Boothbishop, the cannon in Peter's car accidentally fires upwards, breaking a utility pole in half and the famous scream is heard as the worker on it falls. In Blue Harvest an Imperial Stormtrooper screams when a wall bursts. In "Dial Meg for Murder", when Drunk Billy, the helicopter pilot for Quahog 5 News, runs over the water skiers in the montage, the scream is heard. In Something, Something, Something, Dark Side, the scream is heard when a rebel is shot during the battle on Hoth. Mirroring a similar scene in Return of the Jedi, It's A Trap! features the scream when one of Jabba the Hutt's henchmen fall into the Sarlacc pit. In "Amish Guy", the scream can be heard when the roller coaster crashes due to Peter's weight. In "Internal Affairs", the scream is heard during the chicken fight, when Peter and the Giant Chicken travel back in time to the days of cowboys and Indians, and they toss a cowboy overboard. The scream can be heard during Peter and Homer's fight in "The Simpsons Guy". File:SethWilhelm.png
