Jack, who's full name was John Thomas Jones, was born in West Bromwich in October 1874, and spent the early part of his footballing career playing for teams in his native West Midlands. He started out with Sandwell Albion, and had spells with Dudley and Halesowen before joining Small Heath (now known as Birmingham City) in 1894. He spent three years with Small Heath, who were a top-flight club at the time, playing in Division One of the Football League, and scored fifteen times in 35 League appearances for them. He left them in 1897 when he traveled south to play for Bristol Eastville Rovers, as they were known at the time, who were playing in both the Western League and the Birmingham & District League. Two years into his spell in Bristol, the club changed its name to Bristol Rovers and joined the Southern League, and Jones firmly established himself as the team's first choice centre forward. He was the club's top goalscorer in all three of the seasons he spent playing for them in the Southern League, and was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur in 1902, where he continued to be a hit in the competition. He went on to score 35 goals in 58 appearances in all competitions for Spurs until his premature demise. In 1904 he contracted typhoid fever, and he died from the disease on 13 September that year. He was aged just 29, and still in the prime of his career.
