A disposal well is a well drilled into deep formations separated from potable water by impermeable formations. Disposal wells are used for disposal of waste water associated with oil or gas production, often those where hydraulic fracturing was used, or industrial production. Sequestration of carbon dioxide to combat global warming has been proposed as a use of disposal wells. Disposal wells must be adequately cased and existing wells, particularly abandoned oil wells, in the area must be located and plugged if groundwater contamination is to be avoided.
