In Navajo mythology, Tieholtsodi was a water monster. He was an enemy of mankind earlier in history, but has toned down his enmity towards the present time. Even today though, Tieholtsodi is still held responsible for drownings. In the years when he was a more formidable threat, he once sent a huge flood to wipe out mankind, but a few people escaped that flood. That flood wiped out the Third World and a subsequent flood would wipe out the Fourth World (the present world is believed by the Navajo to be the Fifth World). Some versions of the story only have Tieholtsodi sending a flood in the Fourth World.
