  • The USS Talon (NCC-75227) was the prototype of the Talon-class scouts. It entered service in 2373 and was assigned to Starbase 315. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 1: The Ships of Starfleet)
  • Following development of the Talon-class scout ship, the USS Talon was constructed as the prototype. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Player's Guide, Decipher RPG module: Starships) It underwent a number of revisions, and the final addition was a Class 5 long-range sensor cluster. (Decipher RPG module: Starships) The USS Talon and the Talon-class were commissioned in 2373. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Player's Guide, Decipher RPG module: Starships) The USS Talon was assigned to Starbase 315 around 2374 as part of its fleet of support vessels, allowing for long-range research missions in the BeTau sector. Usually in the custody of the station's science officer, it was granted to such missions according to need. Over half its missions took it to studies of the Lazarus star Yanixx and the archaeological expedition on Heret IV. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Player's Guide) Later in its service, the Talon was attached to the joint Federation–Son'a duck-blind cultural survey of the Ba'ku on their colony world. In the year 2375, when Lieutenant Commander Data learned of their true mission on the planet, he used the scout ship to keep Son'a ships from attacking the planet. When Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Commander Worf arrived to investigate in a Type-11 shuttlecraft, Data pursued and fired upon them with the Talon. They attempted to transport Data off the scout, but he activated a transport inhibitor. Eventually, Picard and Worf were able to forcibly dock with its ventral docking hatch and apprehended Data. (TNG movie & novelization: Insurrection; Decipher RPG module: Starships) There is an apparent contradiction in that the Star Trek: The Next Generation Player's Guide placed the Talon at Starbase 315, while Starships identified it as the ship used on the planet Ba'ku at around the same time. It is possible that the ship was reassigned to Ba'ku, or that a mission from Starbase 315 sent it there (suggesting that NCC-75227 belongs to Starbase 315).
