  • Latin Empire: an empire founded after the Crusaders conquered Constantinople.
  • Origins of the name of this state/nation in the Latin language was known as Imperium Romaniae which meant Empire of Romania; it was used to base the fact that the common name for the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire in this period was Romania which meant Land of the Romans. The names of Byzantine and Latin were not always contemporaneous terms which was invented in later years by historians who seek differentiation of the classic period of the Roman Empire, the medieval period of the Byzantine Empire, and the later medieval years of the known Latin Empire, which all of these three were known to call themselves Roman. The term Latin also was used because the Crusaders (known as Franks, Venetians, and other Western civilians) were Roman Catholic which made them use Latin as their liturgical and scholarly language. It was also used in contrast to Eastern Orthodox locals who used Greek in either liturgy and common speech.
