The Mines supply the crystal used in building the skyscrapers and other buildings of Wondertropolis, as well as possibly supply crystals for other uses (entertainment, fire crystals, ammunition). Early in Alyss Heart's reign, many prisoners were wrongly incarcerated here, and Alyss signed many official pardons in order to free them. Jack of Diamonds was imprisoned here until his liberation by King Arch.

  • Several years before the present day, the Crystal Mines was a primary source of the Zone's economy, providing jobs to many of the area's residents. However, a fire broke out one day, threatening the lives of many of the miners trapped underground. The mayor at the time was able to escape, but returned to save the other miners. The majority of the workers were saved, but the hero was never seen again. His tale made him into a local legend. The Crystal Mines were closed shortly afterwards.

Much later, people began to be scared of the Crystal Mines after hearing noises in that direction. Tails was called in to investigate, recruiting Zone Leader Charles as a guide. The pair hiked to the remote mines and were greeted by several Badniks disguised as ghosts. The spooky robots were quickly defeated when Tails found their power source, turning them off before they could attack Charles. They then moved on to the Minework Hub, the base of all operations, where a rickety platform saw Tails plummet into a giant spider's den. The fox was able to escape with help from the ghost of Charles' grandfather and the pair concocted a plan that bound the spider and impaled it on a crystal. Upon learning that Charles was nowhere to be seen during the encounter (initally believing the ghost to actually be Charles), the pair decided to leave the mines.
