- A few months into Doctor Ivo Robotnik's Drakon-led invasion of Mobius, the former dictator had taken over the Rail Canyon Zone and installed a large number of Badniks there. As part of the resistance, Knuckles the Echidna accompanied G.U.N. on an offensive operation. The echidna attracted the attention of several Badniks, leading to a holographic impression of Robotnik taunting him once he was defeated. Elsewhere in the Zone, camouflaged G.U.N. soldiers also came under attack, but were able to fight off the Badniks and install a Zone-wide jamming device. With no Badniks operation for a full minute, Tikal was able to destroy most of Robotnik's forces in the area, G.U.N. providing support.

The loss of the Rail Canyon Zone was regarded as a minor annoyance by Robotnik. Backed by a huge armoury, Robotnik sent his napalm eggs to the Sand Ocean Zone, hoping to make it Rail Canyon's replacement.
