  • The Sting was a popular movie on Earth that involves a complicated plot by two professional grifters who con a mob boss. In 2006, Dr. Bill Lee compared Dr. Elizabeth Weir and Dr. Rodney McKay's deception of him to this film. (SG1: "The Return, Part 2")

  • A cargo ship is traveling south, when suddenly bombs are thrown on board. When the captain alerts the crew of the attack, waterbenders ambush the ship. The crew manages to escape, defeating the waterbenders whilst commenting that "Varrick [will] not be happy". On the ship, Mako and Asami have a conversation with a talkative Two Toed Ping. The conversation eventually turns to Mako dating the Avatar, which Mako uneasily brushed aside. When Ping could not stop talking, Mako mentioned that he broke up with Korra, to Asami's surprise and disbelief and the Triple Threats' humor and mocking.
  • The Planet Express crew are sent on a mission that the previous Planet Express crew didn't survive, collecting honey from space bees. Bender is given a tape to speak the bee's language of dancing so they don't attack Fry and Leela. Leela finds an adorable baby queen bee and decides to take it back to Earth so they can create their own hive. Bender accidentally insults the queen bee, to which the space bees start to chase the crew. While escaping in the Planet Express ship, the baby queen bee wakes up. Fry stands in front of Leela to protect her, but it runs him right through, its sting only pricking Leela, but killing Fry. Bender tosses the bee into the airlock and shoots it into space, where it gets hit by a space-truck. Later, a funeral is held and Fry's coffin is shot into space. During
  • The title phrase refers to the moment when a con artist finishes the "play" and takes the mark's money. If a con is successful, the mark does not realize he has been "taken" (cheated), at least not until the con men are long gone. The film is played out in distinct sections with old-fashioned title cards, with lettering and illustrations rendered in a style reminiscent of the Saturday Evening Post. The film is noted for its anachronistic use of ragtime, particularly the melody "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin, which was adapted for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch (and a top-ten chart single for Hamlisch when released as a single from the film's soundtrack). The film's success encouraged a surge of popular and critical acclaim for Joplin's work.
