Georgia has a 13.1 per 100,000 rate of deaths from gun violence. That is lower than poor benighted Alabama but higher than in South Carolina or Florida. Daily Beast Having more of a coastline seems to help. Georgia's ranks 38th in literacy rate among American states, at 82.8%, below the national average of 84.2%. The good news is that social change is happening despite the sclerotic conservatism of its politics. For example as of 2013 a healthy majority of Georgian residents favor the legalization of marijuana.
