The Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands, SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany) is the governing party of DDR from the formation of the Republic on 7 October 1949. The SED is a communist political party with a Marxist-Leninist ideology, considered to be stalinist in the first years of the DDR's existence and evolved later to the German Socialism.

- thumb|100px Die Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED) entstand durch den zwangsweisen Zusammenschluss der SPD und KPD durch die sowjetische Besatzungsmacht in deren Besatzungszone in Mitteldeutschland. Bis 1990 hatte die SED die Regierungsgewalt in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik inne. Nach der Revolution von 1989 verlor die SED ihre absolute Macht und wurde unter Gregor Gysi in Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands/Partei des Demokratischen Sozialismus (SED/PDS) umbenannt. Kurzform der Partei war nun PDS, der sich schnell als alleinige Parteibezeichnung durchsetzte.
