Captain David Barden was an Army Officer who called at 6 Coronation Street to tell Eddie and Anna Windass that son Gary had been injured on his tour of duty of Afghanistan in an ambush. As well as shrapnel wounds to his back and legs, Gary suffered a fractured left arm and two ribs. Captain Barden expected Gary to make a full recovery but, in answer to a question from Anna, he has to break the sad news that Gary’s mate Quinny has been one of the three fatalities in the attack. They were further told that Gary was being flown back to the UK and would be taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
