The smallest unit of matter that has all the characteristics of its element. An atom is made up of a central, positively charged nucleus surrounded by a system of electrons. Atoms generally remains undivided in chemical reactions; the exception is in the limited removal/transfer/exchange of valence (outer shell) electrons.
