Richardson ascended to the White House after President Gravel stepped down, and almost immediately chose as a vice president Amy Klobuchar, making history not just in his own presidency, but also in the vice presidency of Klobuchar, the first woman to hold one of the two top executive positions. In his two years as president, Richardson's primary focus was on safely ending the increasingly unpopular Jordanian War, which he was ultimately able to do. Richardson nonetheless lost his reelection bid in 2012 to Jon Huntsman, Jr.
