In the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, an animal is a creature type. They are living, nonhuman vertebrate creatures with no innate magical abilities or capacity for language or culture. Virtually all animals are based off of real-world animals, instead of fantasy-based creatures, which are often categories in to other groups, especially magical beasts. Animals can never have an intelligence higher than two points under normal rules; any animal that obtains a higher intelligence through some means is recategorized into “magical beast.”

Virtually all animals are based off of real-world animals, instead of fantasy-based creatures, which are often categories in to other groups, especially magical beasts. Animals can never have an intelligence higher than two points under normal rules; any animal that obtains a higher intelligence through some means is recategorized into “magical beast.” Some creatures that might be considered normal real-world animals are actually categorized into vermin, which are differentiated by their inability to have an intelligence score at all (which does not necessarily imply lack of brain power, but rather the common use of a collective mindset or hive mind and the inability to be effected by mind-affecting spells and abilities).
