In addition to varying in size, yards can have different kinds of ground cover. The boundaries may be delineated by a hedge, wall, line of trees, a driveway, change in ground cover or nothing. A middle-class yard may also include a garden, a shed or play area. For more expensive places, the yards may have pools, a gazebo or tennis court.

  • A yard was a unit of length (or distance) on Earth equal to three feet or thirty-six inches. In the Melkot's bizarre recreation of Tombstone, Arizona, Sylvia informed Billy Claiborne (actually Pavel Chekov) that she had found "yards and yards" of a "scrumptious material", which she hoped to use to make a wedding gown. (TOS: "Spectre of the Gun" )

  • A yard (abbreviation: yd) is a unit of length in several different systems including United States customary units, Imperial units and the former English units. It is equal to 3 feet or 36 inches. Under an agreement in 1959 between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, the yard (known as the "international yard" in the United States) was legally defined to be exactly 0.9144 metres. Prior to that date, the legal definition of the yard when expressed in terms of metric units varied slightly from country to country.
  • A yard (abbreviation: yd) is the name of a unit of length in a number of different systems, including English units, Imperial units, and United States customary units. Its size can vary from system to system. The most commonly used yard today is the international yard which by definition is equal to 0.9144 metre. The yard is used as the standard unit of field length measurement in both the American, English and Canadian games of football (although Canada has officially adopted the metric system). • You can get to your pet's yard by going to the Neighborhood Page and choosing the "Build" icon, which looks like a hammer and nail. The yard is locked when you first get it. Once inside the Build Mode, you can decorate both your house exterior and your yard. You can add doors, windows, roofs and other items to improve the outside appearance of your house. These items are somewhat expensive to be purchased and can only be placed on the square house.
  • In case you hear someone saying that he wants a Yard of USD, if will sound a little funny. But, Yard is a slang word, now considered a buzzword, short for a "milliard", i.e. one billion of any currency (1,000 million). Thus, it has an interesting aspect. For example, if in a forex market, one wants to buy a billion of USD, he would say that he wants to buy a yard of USD instead of using a billion USD. This ensures that the seller does not mistake a billion for a million.
  • Yards are generally aquatic invertebrate creatures indigenous to Maridia, a sector of subterranean lakes within the planet Zebes. They superficially resemble snails of Earth due to their eyestalks and large armored shell. In truth, this shell makes them extremely strong; the only known weapon capable of harming them is Samus' morph ball bombs. Despite these extremely durable shells, they generally hide within the various pipes that criss-cross Maridia. They can be startled back into their shells, and are harmless when inside of it; it appears to be a hobby of some more sapient organisms (including Samus, to an extent) enjoy kicking or juggling these shells. Once kicked back over, however, they will soon right themselves to continue on with their existence.
  • Yards are creatures resembling small snails with crab-like pincers carrying large, armored shells on their backs. They live in several sections of Maridia in Super Metroid and are seen most of the time moving along the ceilings and walls. A Yard can only be destroyed by Bombs, Power Bombs or the Speed Booster; any other weapon will simply cause them to retreat into their resistant shells. They are harmless while inside their shells, and Samus can even kick or juggle them around by running into them. However, if left alone after kicking them, the Yards will eventually come out of their shells, straighten themselves up, and move directly towards Samus' direction with a drastic increase in speed, attempting to ram her.

Humorously enough, they make odd bouncing noises when kicked. They also appear in Metroid Fusion, in the seabed-like area of Sector 4. These Yards were captured and brought onboard the BSL Station at an undetermined point before the events of the game, where they were eventually infected and mimicked by X Parasites. The X's ability to manipulate their hosts' DNA has given the Yard-X an increase in size with a radically different shell (now cone-shaped). These variants have also acquired the ability to fire spinning bolts of energy from their shells. However the Yard-X are very slow in their movements, unlike their natural counterparts.
