  • Luis the Shepherd was an older Spanish speaking resident of Tierra del Fuego. In 1620, he took in Ben and Ned, who had washed up on the Tierra coast outside of his farm. Luis was a kind and generous sheep herder, although he was very poor. He lived in a cave made partly from a rock and the wood and material from wrecked ships. Luis took care of Ben and Ned and treated the boy as his son. He quickly realized that the boy and his dog were unusual as well as very gifted. In particular, he was amazed that Ben was able to speak fluent Spanish although he was probably Scandinavian and did not seem to grow taller with time. He was also surprised that Ned understood orders extremely quickly especially those from Ben. However, the shepherd was discreet and did not wish to pry into their secret. Luis the Shepherd died in 1623 after suffering injuries from falling off of a cliff.
